University of Kassel, Department of Ecological Plant Breeding and Biodiversity

The department of Ecological Plant Breeding is a new department at the faculty of Organic Agricultural Sciences at the University of Kassel starting on February 1, 2013. The department is equipped with a molecular laboratory and field experiment equipment and has access to two organic experimental farm sites and through agreements with the University of Göttingen to the research farms there.

Prof. Dr. Gunter Backes, PhD in plant breeding, 1995, University of Munich, 12 years scientist at Riso National Laboratory and the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University of Copenhagen, since 2007 Associate Professor at the Department of  Agriculture and Ecology, The University of Copenhagen, Faculty of Life Sciences.

Prof. Backes has extensive experience in molecular analyses of wheat and barley  including QTL analyses, association and linkage mapping, TILLING and ecoTILLING. He is currently involved in the project BIOBREED (2010-2013) (Biotechnology assisted wheat breeding for organic agriculture) and coordinates the work package “Genetic Resources for disease resistance” in the project “Improved Quality and Disease Resistance in Cereal Crops (iKORN)”.

KU-ÖPZ coordinates WP2 and is responsible for all molecular breeding work in the project.
