Isolation of plant pathogens

Within this work package OSCAR investigates the potential of cover crops and living mulches to control the spread of plant pest and diseases, phytopathological risks associated with reduced tillage and high proportion of legumes, as well as the possibilities to mitigate these risks. For this purpose, OSCAR will:

• Assess plant diseases in the Multi-Environment Experiment and in a long-termed experiment;
• study the spread of air borne diseases in species mixtures with plant species of contrasting architecture;
• study the effects of living mulches and cover crops on the epidemiology, dispersal and mycotoxin production of Fusarium fungi in the following main crops wheat, maize, and oats;
• screen potentially useful living mulches and cover crop species identified in work package 5 for their susceptibility to soil borne pathogens;
• assess the impact of improved soil management through the use of suppressive  composts in the laboratory; and
• assess the impact of improved soil management through the use of biofumigation brassicas and suppressive composts in the field.
