P.H. Petersen Saatzucht Lundsgaard GmbH & Co. KG (PHP) Germany

P.H. PETERSEN, based in Lundsgaard, Northern Germany, developed out of an agricultural company in formed 1931. P.H. PETERSEN is the market leader in breeding and production of resistant green manure crops for biological nematode control in Europe. The company and its varieties are well known for quality; it constantly orients its breeding programme towards the current requirements of practical modern farming for: (1) Nematode control (2) Biological control of soil borne diseases (3) Improvement of soil fertility (4) Erosion and leaching control (5) Green manure production.

The processing plant in Lundsgaard, with more than 15,000sq m of warehouses, uses modern cleaning, state-of-the-art processing and efficient packaging facilities. Through SAATEN-UNION, its subsidiaries and partners, seeds are sold in over 20 countries, Germany and Europe being the major markets. Experience of many years in breeding is combined with modern methods and knowledge.

In 1980, the world's first nematode resistant oil radish (Raphanus sativus var. oleiformis) variety NEMEX was listed, shortly followed by the first nematode resistant white mustard (Sinapis alba) MAXI. The oil radish variety COLONEL provided a breeding breakthrough in 1996: the assessment level of Note 1 promises a 90% decrease of the nematode species Heterodera schachtii.

The breeding work also extends to other types of nematodes such as root- knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.) and free-living nematodes like Pratylenchus and Trichodorus species. From 2004 on, multiresistant oil radish varieties such as DEFENDER and CONTRA are available for effective containment of different nematode populations.

With regard to the biofumigation technique P. H. PETERSEN concentrates on breeding and marketing activities under the brand of TerraPROTECT involving species such as Brassica juncea. In addition, new species such as Avena strigosa PRATEX sand oat and Solanum sisymbriifolium WHITE STAR are designed for special situations, as well as established and well known varieties of Phacelia tanacetifolia (e.g ANGELIA), fodder rape (EMERALD, FONTAN, HERZOG), turnip rape (JUPITER), ryegrass (DIPLOMAT, ALISCA), fodder rye (PROTECTOR), spring rye (OVID), winter rye (MATADOR), marrow stem kale (GRÜNER ANGELITER), and swede (DELIKAT).

Role in OSCAR: Being involved in WP3, PHP will participate in the screening programmes for new species, including subterranean clover, testing selected lines in Northern Germany. Together with ARCOIRIS, seed production of novel species and varieties under Mediterranean conditions will be tested.
